The Truth About Making 10K USD Freelancing in Malaysia

How it All Started

The year was 2024. I had just secured an internship but the allowance barely covered my daily commute and expenses. Every trip to the office felt like I was working just to break even. I knew I needed something more sustainable.

My Monthly Salary of Intership on 2024 were RM1,800

While searching for opportunities, I stumbled across a platform that had been around for years yet somehow escaped my attention. Little did I know, this discovery would completely change my future.

The Platform That Changed Everything: Upwork

So what is Upwork? And what so special about it?

Source : Choices of Global Freelance Platform

Upwork is a freelance marketplace connecting businesses with independent professionals. Although platforms like Fiverr, Freelancer.com, and Contra exist, I found Upwork offered the best return on investment for my skills and time. I had tested several options, but only Upwork consistently delivered results.

My First Freelance Job

After completing the registration process , it took me nearly two months to land my first project. It was surprisingly simple: researching products at a local supermarket for a client.

Initially, I was skeptical. Could a task this easy actually pay? Was Upwork even legitimate? My doubts disappeared when I received payment for a total $25 for just one hours of work, credited to my account within 10 days.

After submitting the work, I was paid within 10 days with just one hours of effort. It wasn’t a huge sum, but it was proof that this could actually work.

Balancing a 9–5 Job With Freelancing

At the time, I was still working a full-time internship. My evenings became dedicated to proposals, deliveries, and profile improvements. The first few weeks were exhausting, but once I created a workflow, it became manageable.

My first long term contract that kick start my Freelance Journey.

I committed one to two hours each weekday and more time on weekends. Slowly, I began to understand how proposals worked, the importance of ‘Connects,’ and which niches suited me best.

Eventually, I landed my first long-term project for a short three months project at $3 per hour. After Upwork’s 10% fee, that worked out to about RM 12 per hour.

Scaling From $100 to $10,000 in a Year

I’ve always believed luck plays a role in success. However, it’s the kind of luck that appears when you consistently put in the work. Over time, the combination of steady effort, better client relationships, and targeted proposals helped me hit my first major milestone — $10,000 earned from freelancing.

To some, that might not sound like a fortune. But for me — someone juggling a demanding 9–5 job, freelancing at night, and learning everything from scratch — it felt massive. It wasn’t just about the number. It was proof that this path actually works if you stay patient, smart, and consistent.

5 tips that you will need it

  1. Clients don’t come overnight , you are competing against global freelancers, not your own country only, please make sure you have a good profile or portfolio to showcase.
  2. Connects. Connects!  That’s the main investment you require for using upwork. If you’re new to Upwork, you might not know: applying to job costs ‘connects’, a kind of in -platform currency . You need a certain number to apply for each job. My advice?
  3. Proposal Writing = Your Make-or-Break Moment. A good profile gives you a good impression and provide clients choices to pick on when you are competing with other candidates. But a good proposal writing which outline you did read through the job description and how are you going to tackle the project and sharing your relevant experience will ensure you successfully landing your first job.
  4. Know your rate — and know your field. There are plenty of job opportunities in UPWORK. Study the platform to identify what are the on demand skills or service people need. From there , you will know how much you get paid from the services provided.
  5. Keep everything short and – Keep Going! Don’t overthink your pitch, your pricing, or your journey. Keep your communication clear and simple. Most importantly: just keep showing up. Freelancing takes time to build, but if you’re consistent and smart about where you apply and how you present yourself, the results will come.

And that’s how I made my first 10,000 USD.
